What we will learn together today is about appendicitis.

Appendicitis is a common abdominal disease that affects more than 100,000 people each year.

The appendix refers to the part where the small and large intestines connect. The 10 cm tail part attached to the appendix is called the appendix. 맹장염 자가진단

What is Appendicitis?

Appendicitis occurs when the appendix, which attaches to the appendix, becomes inflamed and the opening is blocked.

At first, the pus collects only inside the appendix, but if left unattended, the wall eventually rots and the pus comes out, leading to peritonitis.

Appendicitis is the most common disease that surgeons operate on. Clinical manifestations include non-perforated, perforated local peritonitis, and advanced disseminated diffuse peritonitis.

This kind of appendicitis usually appears well in young people in their 10s and 20s. It most often appears in the early 20’s.

Children under the age of 10 or middle-aged patients over the age of 50 account for only about 10% of all patients.

Appendicitis is medically referred to as appendicitis or appendicitis. Appendicitis is called appendicitis because the appendix is the starting point of the large intestine and is the part where the intestine called the appendix is attached.

There was also a report that Lee Jae-yong, vice chairman of Samsung, a giant Korean company, also had his appendix burst due to appendicitis when he was imprisoned in a detention center in Seoul, and not only the appendix but also part of the colon was cut off.

It is one of these common ailments.

What Causes Appendicitis?

The exact cause of appendicitis is not known, but

As a guess

– Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the appendix by bacteria in the intestine
-Bacteria from pharyngitis and pneumonia are transferred to the blood and cause inflammation
It is caused by obstruction of the appendix due to hardened feces, parasites, foreign bodies, or inflammation around the intestine or appendix.

and so on. Usually, if you look at patients with appendicitis, it seems to start when the opening in the appendix is closed.

In teenage patients, submucosal lymphoid vesicles often proliferate and cause obstruction.

In adults, obstruction is often caused by the analysis of hardened and clumped stools.

early symptoms of appendicitis

Most patients experience abdominal pain similar to gastritis symptoms. Additionally, symptoms such as anorexia, nausea, and vomiting occur together, and in rare cases, abdominal tenderness and fever appear.

Full-early abdominal pain is vaguely felt pain in the upper abdomen above the navel. Then, the scope is gradually limited to right lower abdominal pain below the navel.

The location of the appendix varies slightly from person to person, but usually the pain appears in the right flank.

The most common tender point is an area called McBurney’s point, about 5 cm from the right anterior superior pole of the ilium, which corresponds to the normal location of the appendix.

In addition, the desire to defecate may occur after defecation, and symptoms such as diarrhea, peritonitis, and intestinal obstruction may occur.

Which disease has symptoms similar to appendicitis?
※enteritis
Enteritis caused by a viral infection is mostly abdominal pain and fever accompanied by diarrhea in children.

In this case, medication may improve the symptoms.
※Mesenteric lymphadenitis
If lymphadenitis occurs in the right lower abdomen, a differential diagnosis from appendicitis is required.

Lymphadenitis is also treated with medication to improve it.
※Right large intestine diverticulitis
A diverticulum is a sac in which the wall of the large intestine protrudes outward. It occurs most often in the left colon.

When these diverticula become inflamed, it is called diverticulitis.

Symptoms include abdominal pain and fever, and if diverticulitis occurs in the right large intestine, the location is similar to that of the appendix, so the clinical symptoms appear similar.

Diverticulitis is treated with antibiotics. If it occurs frequently, the large intestine with diverticulitis will be resected.
※Pelvicitis
Pelvic inflammatory disease mainly affects women.

There are important reproductive organs such as the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes in the female pelvis, and when inflammation occurs in these places, the lower abdomen hurts and a differential diagnosis is needed from appendicitis.

How to self-diagnose appendicitis

Early symptoms and causes of appendicitis, self-diagnosis method, hospital diagnosis, treatment method, operation cost, course
Appendicitis will proceed with excisional surgery because the aftereffects that appear if left untreated are more serious than the complications that appear during surgery.

Depending on the degree of progression of appendicitis, it is classified into early appendicitis, purulent appendicitis, gangrenous appendicitis, and perforated appendicitis.

Surgery should be performed within 48 hours of feeling the initial appendicitis pain.

Therefore, if sudden abdominal pain is ignored or left unattended for more than 48 hours, it can be dangerous due to perforation and peritonitis.

※ Self-diagnosis method

How to differentiate between normal abdominal pain and appendicitis abdominal pain?

As explained earlier, in the early stages of appendicitis, it is difficult to distinguish it from general abdominal pain.

However, as time goes by, excruciating pain appears in the right lower abdomen below the navel.

At this time, when you lightly press the right lower abdomen with your hand, if the pain is worse when you release your hand than when you press it, you should suspect appendicitis.

Additionally, if the pain is relieved when you lie down and the right knee is bent, and the pain worsens when you straighten the knee, it is likely appendicitis.

In addition, symptoms such as constipation and diarrhea may occur.

In this case, do not delay and go to the hospital or emergency room for diagnosis.

Diagnosis method

If appendicitis is suspected and you visit the hospital, consult to distinguish it from other diseases with similar symptoms,

Abdominal examination, X-ray, blood test, urine test, abdominal ultrasound test, and CT scan are performed.

Appendicitis has no cause, so there is no way to prevent it.

It is best to act quickly when symptoms appear to avoid complications.

Treatment method (surgery required?) Cost of appendicitis surgery

You must go to a surgical hospital or an emergency room.

In the early stages of appendicitis or when the symptoms are mild, antibiotic treatment is performed.

However, in most cases, the appendix is removed through excisional surgery. Antibiotics are given prior to surgery to reduce the risk of bacterial infection.

If inflammation forms an abscess, a drainage tube is inserted and drained without immediate surgery, and antibiotics are administered to subside the inflammation.

Then, 6 to 12 days later, an appendectomy is performed.

※ Appendicitis surgery cost (as of 2022)

price
Up to KRW 713,300
Average KRW 618.167
Minimum KRW 450,000
Appendicitis surgery costs an average of 600,000 won. The cheapest place was 450,000 won, and the most expensive place was 700,000 won.

In addition, the emergency room fee + surgery fee + hospitalization fee will be charged. Appendicitis usually requires hospitalization for 3 to 4 days.

In the emergency room, basic tests and CT scans, which are unconditionally performed, cost about 200,000 won.

If you add up the cost of surgery, examination, and hospitalization, the total cost will be between 1 million won and 1.5 million won.

Fortunately, appendicitis surgery is billable, so you can get your money back.

Complications after surgery?

If appendicitis is not perforated, complications occur in 5-10% of cases.

Postoperative complications occur in 15% to 65% of patients with perforation.

Inflammation occurs and perforation occurs in 20% of patients within 24 hours,

Emergency surgery is performed because perforation occurs in 70% of patients within 48 hours.

Perforation is more likely to occur in the elderly, who are prone to perforation, or in children with immature intestinal membranes. Infection is the most common complication of this.

If inflammation is severe or an abscess has formed, an abscess may develop in the pelvis, under the diaphragm, or in the abdominal cavity.

A fistula may develop between the intestine and the skin if fluid leaks from the surgical section or if the barrier is weakened.

After surgery, intestinal obstruction may occur, and intestinal obstruction may occur immediately after surgery to several years after surgery.

I learned about appendicitis with me today. Any help?

Appendicitis often requires surgery.

If left unattended because of this fear, it will lead to a worse outcome, so it is better to go to a surgical hospital or emergency room as soon as possible.

Nowadays, appendicitis surgery is usually performed laparoscopically through a small hole in the belly button. Recovery is almost disastrous

They say there are no spots left.

Please don’t be too scared and get treatment quickly. Please see below for recommendations for related hospitals
